The Junior Hedgehogs began as a small homeschool initiative designed to help my children build social skills and connect with peers. What started as a simple park day—learning the basics of disc golf and making new friends—quickly grew beyond our expectations. Our first gathering included about ten children, many of whom had never played disc golf before.
As interest continued to grow, the support from our local community, along with contributions from Innova, Dynamic Discs, MVP Sports, and the Educational Disc Golf Experience, allowed us to provide discs and equipment to new players. This generosity helped us expand the program and introduce the sport to families in a way that had not previously been seen in our area.
As the group continued to grow, a close friend joined to help support the program—though I suspect his enthusiasm for playing more disc golf played a part as well. Together, Frank and I began organizing regular practices to give the kids more structure and consistency.
Before long, Debby—an accomplished member of Team Mint and a respected leader in the women’s disc golf community—eagerly stepped in to contribute. As a retired schoolteacher, she missed working with children and saw this as the perfect opportunity to combine her passion for teaching with her love of disc golf.
With this dedicated core team, the Junior Hedgehogs have expanded from our original group of ten children to as many as forty youth participating at a time. Our growth reflects not only the rising interest in disc golf, but also the commitment of the volunteers who make this program possible.
